Woman In Hong Kong Charged For Assaulting Her Indonesian House Maid
Hong Kong: a woman in Hong Kong has been charged guilty for assaulting her Indonesian maid, a case which caused plight of migrant workers across Asia and Middle East.
A woman named Law Wan-tung, has been charged guilty on Tuesday by the court on several charges brought against her by her maid. Ms Wan-tung has been charged for assaulting, manhandling, not paying and for not giving off time to her Indonesian maid Erwiana Sulistyaningsih.
Ms. Erwiana Sulistyaningsih had been accused by her employer over the period f of six years before she brought charges against her. Her case got attention of people around the city and her case became common talk amongst the citizens of Hong Kong especially after photos of her injuries got circulated in Honk Kong. The pictures showed her damaged face, burnt skin, her hands and legs covered with laceration and scabs and her skin blackened.
According to the evidence presented in the court Ms. Wan-tung tortured her maid physically and mentally both. The medical and evidence provided to court showed that Ms. Sulistyaningsih had fractured teeth, her face, hands and legs skin was blackened due to the regular beatings given to her.
On inquiry Ms. Sulistyaningsih informed court that her employer had several times punched her on face, had twice jammed a metal vacuum cleaner tube in her mouth, and had hit her many times on the back with a feather duster.
She was not allowed to sleep and if she sleeps without her employer’s permission, the employer uses to beat her up with a rod. In her statement she further stated that once her employer Ms. Wan-tung had allegedly forced her to stand naked in bathroom while she splashed water on her and pointed a fan at her.
The judge has found Ms.Wan-tung to be guilty of the charges brought against her by Ms. Sulistyaningsih and had ordered Wan-tung to pay 48000 Hong Kong dollars to Ms. Sulistyaningsih as a payment which is due.
Ms. Wan-tung is scheduled to be sentenced on 27th feburary.
